Stand Your Ground! by Glaive-Silver Stand Your Ground! by Glaive-Silver
:iconlunamadplz::iconsays3plz:"Stand strong, guards! They may have breached the city's walls, but they will not take the castle while we still draw breath! Celestia's forces will arrive very soon, and we must only hold out for a little while longer!":iconsays3eplz:

------------------

Luna was tasked with overseeing Canterlot's defenses while Celestia was to go on a campaign to the west. Shortly before Celestia was due to return, an unknown force from the north staged a rapid invasion straight into the heart of Equestrian territory. The attack would have been successful if Luna didn't have the foresight to station scouts throughout the land.

Still, even with roughly a day's advance warning, the guards were not fully prepared for such a large siege, and were quickly pushed back into the inner city, and the castle.

Celestia's forces are only a half a day's march away from the city. Luna's forces are under heavy siege, and extremely outnumbered.

------------------

This one was a lot of fun to draw, despite reusing a background. I couldn't think of a suitably decent backdrop that still had that 'Canterlot' feel to it. I don't know if my wrist could have taken much more, anyway!

That Night Guard's armor was a pain to draw, especially. But I just had to include him in the picture, rather than another regular guard. His design is awesome!

The original background is by ~StarshineCelestalis and can be found here: [link]

EDIT: Updated it to a higher resolution. Also made a few tweaks to Luna's leg and the Solar Guard's legs as per the suggestion of *TheDescendantofKehAn.

EDIT: This piece made it onto EqD's Drawfriends post? :iconapplejackishappyplz:
No wonder this piece got so many views! Thanks, everyone!

And for getting this far down the description, I'll give you a little bonus: This scenario is just a war game.

In his newest work, Stand Your Ground, Glaive-Silver presents us with a unique use of his ample talents.

The story presented by the image is clear. The younger sister sovereign of Equestria, Luna, stands and delivers orders to two of her royal guard. One can hear her distinctive voice echoing off the palace walls as she pans her gaze over whatever force is threatening the peace of her domain.

Glaive had a very distinct and easily interpreted vision for the work. One can see the way that "combat" is locked across the eyes of the two guards. The poses are dynamic, especially for the Nightbringer herself and the pegasus guard in Celestia's paint (as the fanon goes).

One must try hard to find such images, and rather than try to force the viewer into trying to comprehend a large battle scene Glaive instead chose to present a small, almost intimate moment, of a larger battle. Only the works single flaw, which we will discuss in a moment, disrupts the idea that we are watching a slice of something more... perhaps like focussing on one soldier or moment in a cyclorama of a great battle.

Glaive-Silver has once again used his considerable talent to an excellent degree. His technique remains as steady and as sure as in any of his other works, and shows that much more growth, as any good artist should do. The sole concern is how the pegasus guard seems to be entirely on the same plane despite having some of his legs closer to the foreground. The same can be said for Luna's forelegs. Oddly, the Night Guard does not display the same fault. We know that Glaive-Silver will grow in his technique, and we look forward to seeing what he does.

The sole error or problem that this reviewer has with the work is that it is too "clean". Despite the situation presenting itself the characters are not harried or even sweating. From their poses they seem to have already been engaged in combat, and from the sharp looks in their eyes it seems that their enemies are near and that fighting is swirling around them, yet we do not get any other cues for such. While it is not necessary to dump buckets of blood across a work to achieve such an effect, a stray waft of mane or a missing but of armor would have spoken volumes. This is the sole fault of what is otherwise an excellent work with a deep impact.

We congratulate Glaive-Silver on his ever-expanding talent, and hope that we see more from him soon.

Soldier: I can't do this! Can't do it! We're all gonna be butchered! Like cows, frickin' cows! :fear:

:iconprincesslunaplz: : [knocks some sense into him] Calm thyself! Until my sister arrives, we will not allow this city to fall! Is that understood?!

Soldier: Y-yes, you're majesty! I'm sorry... :salute:
