3D Print - Princess Luna by Glaive-Silver 3D Print - Princess Luna by Glaive-Silver
A 3D Full Color Sandstone print of Princess Luna.

I used :iconkp-shadowsquirrel:'s Luna model with permission, and I have to say, it came out really well.

A big thanks to :iconpizzalover53: for helping me with the model's texturing. I just couldn't seem to get it right, myself.

Printed by www.shapeways.com

Overall dimensions:
2.9 in. (width) x 4.1 in. (length) x 3.6 in. (height)

Total cost: $54.74 (including shipping costs and taxes).

------------------

MLP: FiM is Hasbro

Many people have asked me if I plan to sell this model on Shapeways. Personally, I do not feel comfortable making a profit on another person's work. However, I have gained permission to release the model so you folks can make your own copies.

You can download the model here: [link]
All I ask of whoever downloads the model is: Please do NOT use it for your own profit!

It's a .blend file, so you can scale it to however large you want it. Just remember, smaller is cheaper. Blender also scales to the point where 1 Blender unit = 1 millimeter, so you will have to scale the model down quite a bit. Rotate the model 90 degrees on the X-axis, and you can export it to an STL file.

From there, all you have to do is upload it (select millimeters as the scale!), and you should be good to go! Remember to choose 'Full-Color Sandstone' when choosing the model's material, otherwise you'll end up with a blank Luna-shaped model with no color details.

3D print? As in the type used to make 3D models by binding molecules together using a sticky resin? Isn't that very expensive? o.o

Would you mind posting a link to the shapeways submission? I sure wouldn't mind getting my hooves on one of these, and I'm sure others might want to order a copy as well :)

I could, but I'm going to have to check with KP first, seeing as it's not my model. If he gives the go ahead, I'll put it up.

I fixed up the description for the picture. You can download the file I used and upload it to Shapeways yourself. This way, you can make the model bigger or smaller if you wish. Just remember that smaller models have a higher tendency to break at their weak points.

It kills me how much those companies are charging for 3D printing. Certainly, it isn't cheap, but that thing wouldn't have even cost $20 in base materials and power to print.

I really regret not taking advantage of my college's 3D printer when I was going there. They only charged us for the ink!

It's early days for the tech yet, high prices are to be expected. And there are plenty of people who will pay fifty bucks for a tangible figure of their personal OC or MMORPG character.

I was wondering if anyone would ever make a print using ShadowSquirrel's models. Came out great! Working on my own Spike model that I hope to print too.

Shapeways is awesome. You said you needed help with the texturing, was ShadowSquirrel's not sufficient? Because I'm actually considering getting my own now.

Actually, the textures are the same ones used by ShadowSquirrel. It's just that they're not in a format that Shapeways immediately recognizes.

For that, I'd have to direct you to :iconpizzalover53: since he was the one that got them set up for me.
Truth be told, my skills with Blender and 3DS Max are pretty much non-existent.

All I really know is that the textures need to be in .png, or .jpg, rather than the .tif format provided. They also have to be manually re-mapped to the model and saved that way. It was the re-mapping that killed me every time.

Man, I wish I had a 3D printer. That's a high price for a small figurine, but I do know printing material costs a lot.

The sandstone is actually one of the cheaper options, funnily enough. But it's also the only one that allowed for printing in color. Since my painting skills aren't all that great (my hands aren't steady when it comes to detail work), I went with that.

Regardless of the lack of steadiness of your hands, it still looks good even down to the darker lines in her tail and mane.

Oh, no, I didn't actually color this. The color is all in the sandstone itself, and the design was pulled straight from the texture files of the original model.

I'd definitely be more than a bit happy if I were able to detail something like this by hand, though.
